Help with data formatting

Postby health_networks » 22 Jul 2013 22:04

I've got a question that I'm guessing/hoping will be very basic to regular Gephi users but has stumped me for days. I'm trying to format a large amount of data I have compiled via Survey Monkey so that it can be read by Gephi. The data is currently in a csv file, in a square matrix that basically looks like the image I've attached (or see figure 5.6 here http://faculty.ucr.edu/~hanneman/nettext/C5_%20Matrices.html.

I need to transform this data to a node list and edge list that can be read by Gephi, maybe into something like the "Zachary's Karate Club" example in the sample datasets http://wiki.gephi.org/index.php/Datasets. I understand how I could do this by hand, but have much too much data to make this feasible. Is there some kind of simple operation one can use either in Excel or in Gephi to do this?

OR, if one has a square matrix in csv format, is there some other way to get it into Gephi that I'm missing?

Thanks so much for helping me out with this -- it's a critical step I just can't seem to crack on my own.

You can use the CSV Matrix format (this is used with File - Open, not import spreadsheet).

Life... is like a grapefruit. It's orange and squishy, and has a few pips in it, and some folks have half a one for breakfast.
